The recovery center at Cardinal Cove has not been used since its evacuation during Hurricane Katrina. Work to rehabilitate the facility is broken into two phases. Phase 1 work is complete. This included abating lead and asbestos, and stabilizing the roofs and exteriors of the buildings. During the stabilization process, designs were completed to modernize the facility. Modernization includes converting shared accommodations to private sleeping rooms and baths, providing for mobility patients and guests, adding administration spaces and parking, and updating all electrical and HVAC systems.
